Is Invisalign Teen right for you?
So you’ve just found out that you need braces. Although it can be an exciting milestone for some patients, we can guess that the last thing on your mind is how straight your teeth are going to look in two years when it’s time to get your braces removed.
While our color braces are highly effective and many kids love them, you might rather have a product that is less noticeable and complements your appearance. After all, you’ve got a lot to focus on in the coming years: yearbook pictures, homecoming, and school dances (just to name a few). That’s why we encourage you to ask our orthodontist at Charleston Orthodontic Specialists whether Invisalign Teen is right for you. It’s an alternative to color braces that straightens your teeth without anyone knowing! If you’re worried that braces might get in the way of your smile, then a virtually invisible option might be what you need.
Who is it for?
Invisalign Teen is ideal for our younger patients who have mild to moderate orthodontic needs such as overcrowding, small gaps, and overall alignment issues. It is mainly used for specific cases that fall into the 7-9 month treatment time range. Parents should trust their children to be responsible enough with wearing their aligners for at least 22 hours every day. Teens will have to keep up with their Invisalign aligners throughout their busy days at school.
How does it work?
Invisalign Teen works in the same way as our Invisalign Full product. The treatment is designed for less complex cases while still providing the aesthetic and efficient benefits of the Invisalign system. Invisalign Teen accommodates younger patients by leaving room for their incoming adult teeth if they have not lost all of their baby teeth.
Each aligner tray with Invisalign Teen comes with a blue compliance indicator. This small dot on the back of each tray slowly fades as they are worn. Parents can use this to monitor how often their child wears their Invisalign to keep them accountable.
Invisalign aligners straighten your teeth by applying gradual pressure on specific teeth at different times during your treatment. Individually manufactured for your teeth by Invisalign, they are worn in two week increments. As you replace each aligner with the next set your teeth will move gradually until full correction is achieved. We usually give patients enough aligners to last 10-12 weeks so they are normally coming back about once every 2 to 3 months so time missed from work or other activities is minimized.
The Perks of Invisalign Teen
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment option that straightens teeth using custom plastic aligners. The product is capable of correcting mild to severe orthodontic issues, ranging from slight tooth crowding to underbites and overbites. However, it’s essential that an orthodontist performs an examination and determines just how Invisalign can improve your smile.
You’ll wear the clear aligners for two weeks at a time, giving your teeth enough time to gradually move into a healthier position. The best part is that no one will know you’re straightening your teeth! The plastic trays are nearly invisible and won’t affect the appearance of your smile during treatment. The aligners are also custom fabricated just for you, which means that your teeth and gums will feel perfectly comfortable while you wear them.
Eat Whatever You Want!
If you have friends who wear braces, they might have told you that their options are limited when it comes to the foods they can eat, but with Invisalign Teen, that’s not the case! The plastic trays are removable. In fact, we recommend that you take them out every time you eat, which leaves you with endless food choices. Pizza, popcorn? No problem!
Things to Keep in Mind
One thing you’ll need to think about is oral hygiene, as well as the cleanliness of your Invisalign aligners. For your teeth to remain healthy and strong during Invisalign treatment, brushing and flossing two or three times a day is necessary. Additionally, the fact that Invisalign aligners are removable means that the retainers can be easily misplaced or forgotten.
To receive optimal results from Invisalign, it’s essential that you wear the aligners for a minimum of 22 hours per day and replace them every two weeks to keep up with your treatment plan, otherwise, straightening your teeth could take longer than expected.
